Instructions
  • Click on either “scientific” or “common” names to view lists of plants to select from. Typing with the cursor in a list will 'jump' you to that place in the alphabet. Multiple entries can be selected by pressing the keyboard <control> key while clicking. Entering text in the “Quick Search” box will search both scientific and common name lists for matches.
  • When browsing scientific names, a check in the “Show synonyms…” box above the list will add synonyms to the lists. Results will be displayed under the accepted name, with the synonymous name also visible.
  • You can limit your results further by clicking the “Other Options” button and selecting from the lists. These options will stay active until you clear the checks from the lists.
  • Click the “Search” button to show results as thumbnails. Hovering the cursor over the scientific name will show the plant’s common name. Each photo can be enlarged by clicking on the thumbnail; image details and a link to the Oregon Plant Atlas are shown.
  • Please respect that all photographs are copyrighted, and that permission to use any full-size image must be granted by the copyright holder. Use the “contact us” link found at the bottom of each large image to request permission. Thumbnails can be used without prior permission for personal, academic, and other educational purposes if the copyright information and the words "courtesy of Oregon Flora Project" are included.

Photo Gallery Facts

The Oregon Flora Project Photo Gallery is developed from our image library of over 54,000 contributed plant photos. The digitizing and databasing of images has been accomplished with significant help from volunteers. We will update the Photo Gallery periodically with edits and new images. We strive to have photographs from multiple contributors depicting each plant’s habitat, its general habit, flowers, details of important characters, and as available, technical illustrations.
Of the 4,499 plant species, subspecies, and varieties (taxa) recognized by the Oregon Flora Project, the Photo Gallery displays the following:
  • Total number of images: 22,712
  • Number of field photo images: 18,180
  • Total number of taxa with field photo images: 2,883
  • Number of herbarium specimen images: 4,532
  • Total number of taxa (including hybrids) with specimen images: 3,152

The type specimens of the OSU Herbaria together with their published descriptions can be accessed here.
