Rare Plant Guide
Introduction
The purpose of the Oregon Rare Plant Guide is to provide information on some of Oregon's rare, threatened, and endangered vascular plants. The information for each taxon is organized into a "fact sheet; designed to aid in the identification of rare plants in the field. The search features to the left allow users to select a subset of taxa that share features such as geographical region, habitat, survey time, or status of rarity. Individual fact sheets contain additional information as well as photographs, illustrations, and maps. The production date of the fact sheet is indicated on page two of each sheet.
How to use this guide
- To view the list of all 110 taxa in the Rare Plant Guide, click on the "Search; button at the bottom.
- To limit the list of taxa to those with certain criteria, select from the drop-down menus provided.
- Selecting more than one criterion will generate a list of plants that demonstrate all of the selected features.
- The search results will be a list of relevant plants with the scientific name, the common name, a link to the plant's fact sheet (a pdf file), and a link to a distribution map generated by the Oregon Plant Atlas.
Information has been compiled from numerous sources. Descriptions have been written using technical references and examination of specimens in the Oregon State University Herbarium. Illustrations and photographs are credited with their source. Maps are produced from the Oregon Flora Project's Oregon Plant Atlas. The rare plant status information is from the Oregon Natural Heritage Information Center's Vascular Plant Rare, Threatened and Endangered Species List.
Criteria for the Oregon Natural Heritage Information Center's Lists are:
- List 1: taxa threatened with extinction or presumed extinct throughout entire range
- List 2: taxa threatened with extirpation or presumed extirpated from Oregon
- List 3: taxa needing more information before status is determined
- List 4: taxa of conservation concern and requiring continued monitoring
- "#-ex": extirpated from Oregon
The habitats listed are broad categories assigned as a quick reference tool; some taxa are assigned more than one. The habitat categories are defined as follows:
- Aquatic: ponds, wetlands, poorly drained soils, swampy areas
- Dry meadow: grassy meadows, open sites, mountain meadows or balds
- Cliff: outcrops, ridges, canyon walls; moist or dry and rocky
- Forest: coniferous and/or mixed forests
- Oak savanna: dominant overstory of Quercus spp.
- Riparian: along streams or in partially forested understory
