OSU-A

Oregon State University Algae Collection

The Oregon State University Herbarium (OSC) houses approximately 550,000 vascular plant, bryophyte, algal, and fungal specimens. The collections are worldwide in scope, with a focus on the state of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest of the United States and Canada.

Our algae collection is approximately 17,000 specimens. The majority were collected in Oregon by Harry K. Phinney and Grace S. Phinney, and their students, between 1947-1980. A collection of ~1800 marine algae specimens from Portland State University (HPSU) was transferred to OSC in 2015. The collection was built primarily by Ed Lippert at HPSU, and includes material from his students, Ellen Benedict, and others, dating ca. 1956-1990. It is mostly from the PNW, with some from CA, east coast, and Oceania. There are a number of Bob Scagel's exsiccati from UBC (1960s).

Chico State Herbarium

The Chico State Herbarium is the most complete repository of plant specimens from northeastern California. The emphasis is on the northern California flora, and includes a great number of rare, threatened, and endangered plant species. Established with specimens donated by the late Professor Vesta Holt in the 1950's, the Herbarium now contains more than 125,000 dried and mounted specimens. The majority of samples are flowering plants, conifers, and ferns, but bryophytes, lichens, and especially slime molds, are also well represented. The Herbarium is used extensively for identification of sensitive and other plant species by various agencies and individuals. Loans of herbarium specimens are made to any higher academic institutions who request them.

Humboldt State University Vascular Plant Herbarium

The Humboldt State University Vascular Plant Herbarium (HSC) consists of ~104,000 specimens, with a strong emphasis in the flora of northwest California and southwest Oregon. Established in 1960, the Herbarium serves as a botanical resource for students and faculty, as well as, community members and professional botanists. Our collections offer excellent opportunities to learn more about the rich diversity of our native flora, as well as, our exotic and invasive weeds. The Herbarium also participates in loan and exchange programs with other herbaria throughout the country.

Klamath National Forest Herbarium

The Klamath National Forest encompasses nearly 1.7 million acres of land straddling the California and Oregon border in the Klamath-Siskiyou Mountain Ranges. In the mountains to the west, the terrain is steep and rugged, while the east-side has gentler, rolling terrain of volcanic origin, sprinkled with buttes and valleys. Elevations range from 450 to 9,001 feet above sea level at Thompson Peak, on the Siskiyou-Trinity County divide. The Klamath National Forest is one of America’s most biologically diverse regions, due to the blending of four floristic provinces and boasts a center of coniferous diversity (19 species) in the Russian Wilderness. The Klamath National Forest Herbarium aims to preserve and record the many rare and endemic species unique to the region.

Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Garden

The combined Herbarium of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (RSA) and Pomona College (POM) is a museum-quality collection of vascular plant and bryophyte specimens. With current holdings totaling over 1,230,000 specimens, the Herbarium is the third largest in California. The Herbarium is recognized throughout the world for its strength in documenting the diversity, distribution, variation, and ecology of more than 6,500 species of flowering plants, conifers, and ferns in California, which constitutes nearly 50% of the total collection. The holdings from Southern California exceed 250,000 and are unsurpassed by any other herbarium. Approximately 95% of the collection is composed of mounted sheets and filed according to a standardized system of classification. Ancillary collections that augment the collection include a cone & fruit collection, wood collection, fluid preserved collection, and pollen and anatomy slide collection.

Southern Oregon University Herbarium

The Herbarium at SOU (Herbarium code SOC) is a collection of pressed plant specimens located in the Department of Biology Natural History Museum. It was begun by Dr. Frank Lang in 1967 as a teaching facility, it contains representatives of regional flora and serves as a repository for voucher specimens and as a secure site for loans from other institutions for local faculty and student researchers. This collection assists researchers land managers in providing evidence of the arrival of invasive species in an area and the shifting of species ranges in response to climate change and identifying weeds and rare species. Herbarium SOC collections have shown the occurrence in southern Oregon of species formerly known only from California. Information and images for over 23,000 SOC specimens are listed in the database of the Consortium of Pacific Northwest Herbaria, with about 3000 specimens not yet entered. About 21,000 specimens are from Oregon, almost 10,000 from Jackson County, and 1650 from California. The majority of specimens were collected by SOU students. The Herbarium includes gifts from Oregon State University, the University of Oregon, the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, old collections formerly held by the Klamath Falls Museum, and private collections from Jim Duncan, Frank Callahan, and other botanists.

University of British Columbia, Vancouver

Initiated in 1912, the vascular plant collection has the longest history of all UBC collections. Serving as the demonstrator in charge of the Herbarium and Botanical Garden, “Botany John” Davidson created both the UBC Herbarium and Botanical Garden, as well as the Vancouver Natural History Society.

While the Herbarium is home to the world’s largest collection of British Columbia vascular plants, it is global in scope. Of the 223,000 vascular plant specimens, 45% are from British Columbia, 25% from the rest of Canada, including the Northwest Territories and Yukon Territory. The United States make up about 15% of the collection, with 10% from the five Pacific Coast states (California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska) with Hawaiian plants are especially well represented.

WTU-V

University of Washington Herbarium, Vascular Plant Collection

The herbarium's total holdings number over 600,000 specimens of vascular and nonvascular plants, fungi, lichens, and marine algae. The herbarium maintains a regional focus on the Pacific Northwest, covering Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, British Columbia, and the Yukon Territory. Other significant collections come from California, the rest of Western North America, and the Pacific Rim. Our oldest specimens date to the late 1800's. Particularly active periods of growth for the herbarium occurred with the incorporation of the herbarium of J. William Thompson in 1943, collections made under the direction of C. Leo Hitchcock in the 1930's - 1950's, and field work since 2002.

WCW

Whitman College

The herbarium at Whitman College contains around 17,000 dried plant specimens, a large collection for a small liberal arts college. Emphasis is on vascular plants: the specimens include representatives of many Angiosperm families, various Gymnosperm and non-seed taxa, as well as some non-vascular plants, algae and fungi. The herbarium collection emphasizes specimens from the western United States, especially Washington (the Blue Mountains), Idaho, Oregon and California. Among these are specimens collected by C. Piper, W. Cusick and C.L. Hitchcock. It contains an unusual collection of plants from China and Southeast Asia donated by E.F. Anderson, and a representation of species from different parts of the United States. The Whitman herbarium was founded in the late nineteenth century by H.S. Brode and built up over the next one hundred years by P.H. Pope and, most recently, E.F. Anderson.
