Leaves stipules persistent, those near base of stem tightly clasping to slightly enlarged, to 1 mm wide.

Shallow to deep waters of ponds, lakes, and streams. 1200–2400m. ECas, Owy. CA, ID, NV, WA; north to Northwest Territories, east to Newfoundland, southeast to NM; Asia. Native.
