Plants 6–20 dm, glabrous, glaucous or not.
Leaves 10–35 cm, thin, glabrous but occasionally with scattered hairs on veins on underside; leaflets lanceolate to ovate, 2–11 cm.
Inflorescences peduncles 10–45 cm; rays 15–60, 2–11 cm; involucel bractlets 0(1–3), inconspicuous; pedicels 1–7 mm.
Flowers ovaries glabrous.
Fruits oblong to ovate, 4–9 mm.
2n=22.
Wet meadows, roadsides, wooded areas. Flowering May–Aug. 0–2800 m. BW, Casc, CR, ECas, Est, Sisk, WV. CA, ID, NV, WA; north to British Columbia, northeast to Alberta, east to WY. Native.
Angelica arguta is part of a group of described species, with nearly identical morphology, which in our area also includes A. canbyi and A. tomentosa. Here we tentatively accept these species but highly encourage further research, including sampling (molecular and morphological) from throughout each taxon’s range.
