Plants 2–6 dm; taprooted.

Stems branched.

Leaves elliptic to ovate, 3–20 × 2–8 cm, surfaces hairy, bristly at base; proximal leaves petiolate, distal leaves sessile.

Flowers calyces 5–15 mm; corollas 18–20 mm in diameter; anthers 5–10 mm, dark brown.

Fruits 4–6 mm.

2n=16.

Disturbed areas, roadsides, fields. Flowering Apr–Aug. 0–200 m. WV. CA, WA; scattered throughout southern Canada and US; Europe. Exotic.
