Stems 40–100 cm, sparingly branched above, covered with dense, silky hairs.

Leaves basal 9–15 cm; cauline 5–15 cm.

Flowers calyx lobes twisted, linear to lanceolate, 4–7 mm, tubes elliptic to ovoid, 12–15 mm; petals 22–30 mm, limbs exserted, rounded, 10–15 mm; appendages awl-like, 2–4 mm, thickened.

2n=24.

Roadsides, railroad rights-of-way, woods. Flowering Jun–Aug. 0–1300 m. Casc, CR, Sisk, WV. CA, ID, WA; north to British Columbia, northeast to MT, eastern North America; Europe. Exotic.
